Catalyst for Change
Sponsoring Local Research
To help mitigate the challenge of obtaining funding for research projects, one of our initiatives aims to support bright, local minds achieve their goals. In 2024 Kaserem Futures provided our first research grant to Dr. Dan Ayeko. Dr. Ayeko is currently completing his advanced fellowship and is a physician in Uganda and from the town of Kapchorwa. His research project will evaluate the efficacy of current strategies to combat pediatric malnutrition in several districts. We are hopeful that this is the first of many opportunities like this.
Future Scholar Travel Grant
In 2023, We had the pleasure of sponsoring a first year medical student from the Kampala International University to join us on our rural medical
outreach. It amazing to have her on our team. Shalom had never been to these rural regions of the country and we were able to expose her to not just medicine, but to some of the natural wonders of the outdoors - such as a hiking experience and the Nile River. Our goal is to help expose future clinicians to the new ideas in a safe and exciting manner. We look forward to watching her continue to train to become a cardiologist.
Wound Care Grant
In 2023, the Integra Life Foundation provided us with a grant. This effort was in collaboration with Timothy Cherotich, the Clinical Officer in Charge of the Kaserem Christian Medical Center. Through this grant were able to purchase new supplies and an exam light and table. Advanced wound care training was provided to the staff by our team in person. To date, these new capabilities allow the clinic to provide care that has never been offered in the immediate area. So far the effects are demonstrating a reduction in infection and reducing the need to transfer patients.
Opportunities for US Medical Students
This summer we hope to finalize more robust opportunities for students with global health interests to join in our shared medical experiences. Connecting medical students and providers across the globe to help solve problems will lead to innovative changes. In 2023 we were able to bring Ellie Moore - a rising Physician Assistant student - along with us as a team-member. Impactful experiences such as working alongside clinicians in rural settings and getting exposure to such a different, complex environment will challenge learners to think outside the box. Our local team of talented medical providers take their role seriously as they get the chance to educate the future clinicians we bring with us.
